The Temporary Resident Visa is the right first move for most Americans relocating to Mexico. It is also the step where the most applications stall, get delayed, or get rejected — almost always for the same preventable reasons.

What temporary residency gives you

A Temporary Resident Visa lets you live legally in Mexico for one year, renewable for up to three additional years. After four years total you are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency.

With temporary residency you can open a Mexican bank account, enroll in IMSS as a voluntary member, sign a long-term lease, import a vehicle, and work for a Mexican employer if your visa category permits it.

The income requirements as of 2026

INM sets the financial solvency threshold based on UMA — Mexico's official inflation-adjusted unit of measurement — updated every January.

Monthly income route: proof of at least $4,400 USD per month for the 12 months prior to your application. Sources can include Social Security, pension, rental income, employer payroll, or investment distributions.

Savings route: approximately $74,000 USD held consistently in a bank account for the 12 months prior to your application. This must be a stable balance, not a recent deposit.

Note: unlike what some forums claim, you cannot combine income and savings to meet the threshold. You must qualify fully under one route or the other.

For context — Permanent Residency requires significantly more: approximately $7,400 per month in income or $295,000 in savings. Temporary Residency is the right starting point for most Americans.

Government fees in 2026

Budget $56 for the consulate application fee. Once you arrive in Mexico your first one-year temporary resident card costs approximately $560. Over the full four-year path to Permanent Residency total government fees now exceed $2,700 per person.

The application process step by step

Step 1: Apply at a Mexican consulate in the United States. You cannot apply for a Temporary Resident Visa from inside Mexico on a tourist permit.

Step 2: Schedule your consulate appointment. Wait times vary significantly — some Texas consulates book out 6–8 weeks. Plan accordingly.

Step 3: Bring your documents. Standard package includes your passport valid for at least 6 months, 12 months of bank statements, proof of income, completed application form, passport photos, and the $56 application fee.

Step 4: The consulate issues a visa sticker in your passport valid for 180 days.

Step 5: Enter Mexico within that 180-day window. Within 30 days of entry visit your local INM office to begin your residency card process.

Step 6: Receive your residency card. This typically takes 2–6 weeks after your INM appointment.

What actually gets people rejected

Inconsistent bank statements: a balance that spikes right before the application date is a red flag. Consulates want 12 months of consistent balance or income.

Wrong document format: some consulates require notarized translations. Call ahead and confirm exactly what format they accept before your appointment.

Applying from inside Mexico: if you are already in Mexico on a tourist permit you cannot convert it to temporary residency inside the country. You must exit and apply at a consulate.

Waiting too long for the INM appointment: once you arrive in Mexico you have 30 days to visit INM. Many cities have appointment backlogs. Book your INM appointment online the day you arrive.
